By the time of Survivor Series 1990, Ax was in his early forties, and was being kept out of the ring on most occasions at McMahon's insistence. According to Ax, this was because earlier that year, he'd had an allergic reaction to shellfish that led to a temporary heart condition.

McMahon didn't trust Ax to be able to work safely in his ring, and only used him sparingly after that, bringing in Crush as his long-term replacement. For most of the remainder of his WWE tenure, Ax functionally managed Smash and Crush, while in full Demolition costume.

Regardless, the bloom was off the Demolition rose, as McMahon had acquired The Legion of Doom, and had little further use for his previous face-painted tandem. Ax stepped into a WWE ring one last time at the 1990 Survivor Series, took an early pin from The Ultimate Warrior, and then left the company. It was also the last time he and Smash teamed together for a decade and a half.
