10 Fascinating WWE Survivor Series 1998 Facts
6. Steven Regal Was Sent Home Days After The PPV
Not quite "William" yet, Regal was "The Real Man's Man" Steven Regal, a cartoonish role which saw the suave and debonair son of Blackpool donning sleeveless flannel and a yellow hard hat. Regal went to a double countout with X-Pac in the opening round, and soon after faded from the WWE scene.
About three or four days after Survivor Series, Regal was removed from WWE's touring troupe, and sent home after he was found to be in "no condition to perform", as The Wrestling Observer would note. Regal had been struggling with addictions to pain medication, and subsequently checked himself into rehab in January 1999. He was released from WWE several months later, and briefly returned to WCW.
He ended up back in WWE's graces in the spring of 2000, when a cleaner Regal earned high praise for his match with Chris Benoit at the annual Brian Pillman Memorial Show. The performance went a long way toward earning Regal a full-time job once more.
