The tournament final between The Rock and Mankind was very well received, in spite of the groan-worthy rehash of the Montreal Screwjob ending. The match was a wild brawl fitting for the time frame, pitting a still-improving Rock and wizened veteran Foley in an intriguing battle: one man was about to win their very first World title.

According to Foley, the match could've very well been a disaster. He was exhausted from his previous matches (particularly a barn-burner with Austin), and Rock had already worked a few tournament bouts himself.

Foley would later write that after he and Rock locked up, Mick himself couldn't think of what to do next. They had to resort to an early resthold as an excuse to covertly map out ideas, and then go from there.
