WWE Champions have one of two roles at Survivor Series: defend the belt, or take part in an elimination match of some kind. It's not imperative that the champion take part in a title match, but the titleholder is always involved in Survivor Series one way or another. Except for 2014, of course.

That would be the show that was skipped by Brock Lesnar. It wasn't the only show that was missed by "The Beast Incarnate" - the champion went AWOL from September 2014 until after TLC in December, due to the limited dates in his contract.

Every other Survivor Series saw the champion wrestle. In the two years when the belt was vacant going in (1998 and 2015), there was at least a physical representation of a champion by night's end.
