10 Fascinating WWE WrestleMania 11 Facts
7. Chris Benoit Was Considered As Owen's Partner
Talent in WWE was in short supply in 1995, and that's putting it mildly. By this time, "The Crippler" was in the midst of an ECW Tag Team Championship reign with Dean Malenko, and had developed an international following, based on his unyielding work ethic and near-peerless, highly-physical performances between the ropes.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported in mid-March 1995 that Benoit was under consideration to show up as Owen's mystery partner, likely due to the Dungeon/Stampede connection, and win the belts on night one.
The idea never came to fruition, although Benoit did work several non-televised matches for the company in June 1995, managed by Ted Dibiase. WWE passed on signing him, and the future World Champion ended up in WCW around the time Nitro premiered that September.
