More commonly known is Austin's June 2002 walkout, a much more public bit of ugliness that included an alleged domestic incident with then-wife Debra. Prior to that, Austin actually went home right after WrestleMania X8, and didn't return for two weeks, skipping out on the draft for the brand extension as a result.

By Austin's admission, he wasn't happy with his place in the company at the time, nor was he thrilled with WWE's general direction. He didn't like working underneath with Scott Hall at WrestleMania, but claims he had no issues with Hall personally.

Austin has also detailed personal issues plaguing him at the time, from a failing marriage, to the children of his first marriage leaving for England. Factor in being at odds with his employer, and Austin was simply in a bad place.
