At the time of WrestleMania 19, it seemed like Angle was going to miss a year of action after undergoing essential spinal surgery. He would be made aware of a Pittsburgh-based neurosurgeon named Dr. Hae-Dong Jho, who could provide a more invasive surgery that would have Angle back sooner. Sure enough, the wrestling machine was working once more by early-summer 2003.

However, problems began to rear their head once again, and Angle began experiencing more problems by the time of his championship match with Eddie Guerrero. It was noted in Bryan Alvarez's Figure Four Weekly that Angle performed in the captivating bout with numbness in his fingers, and was scheduled for an MRI. Angle would sit out several months, performing in the interim as SmackDown's general manager, before resuming wrestling shortly before SummerSlam 2004.
