The fact that Alberto Del Rio, the Royal Rumble winner, was opening WrestleMania was the least troublesome aspect of the World Heavyweight title match. What home viewers didn't know at the time was that Edge was circling the drain as an in-ring performer. Though he made it through the serviceable title match well enough to an observer, Adam Copeland knew this was likely the end of the line.

Copeland underwent an MRI the day after the show in Atlanta, and was diagnosed with stenosis, a narrowing of his spinal column. It was reported by Dave Meltzer that Edge had been feeling unwell for some time before WrestleMania, experiencing numbness in his hands and arms, and would be reduced to trembling spells at times.

It didn't appear to be widely known how severe Copeland's injuries were, as he was set up for a ladder match with Del Rio at Extreme Rules (which Christian filled in for). The MRI results changed everything, necessitating Edge's exit from the ring.
