9. The Dead Man And The Cucumber
A few years before he passed away, William ‘Paul Bearer’ Moody took part in a three-hour sit down interview with old friend Jim Cornette, and along with the reminiscences on old times and old time pro wrestling, a new nugget of information presented itself.
The Undertaker and his kayfabe manager would often travel together in the early days: the pair being resolutely old school, that meant that Moody was the one that had to get out of the car to buy gas and snacks. On one occasion, the older man urgently needed to use the bathroom, but had to fill up the car before he could get the restroom key and was caught short, urinating in his own trousers. Because wrestlers are just big kids, Calaway found this hilarious, and made sure that the locker room found out about it as soon he possibly could.
Dead Man or not, you don’t mess with Percy Pringle. Knowing of Calaway’s odd fear of a certain bulbous green vegetable, he took ‘Taker’s hat… and filled it with cucumbers. When Calaway came to find his headgear before hitting the ring, the story goes that he reacted unusually strongly… he threw up all over it. There’s another (possibly apocryphal) story that says that someone placed a cucumber in his iced tea at a waffle house in the early nineties as a rib, and had the same upchucking reaction.
