Best Decision: Creating the Mr. McMahon character

Out of all the great decision that Vince McMahon has ever made, none of them were as impactful as his decision to become an on-screen character. After the Montreal Screwjob took place, and fans unraveled that Vince had betrayed one of his most loyal employees, the wrestling world seethed in anger, desperate to see the Janus-faced McMahon get his comeuppance.

Vince channeled that growing ire into a character that was so evil yet so relatable that it was impossible not to hate the guy. It didn’t matter who was opposite Vince McMahon in the ring: everyone would rather hate Vince than anyone else. It’s because of this that Vince was able to have outstanding feuds with the likes of Austin, the Rock, Mankind, and many more.

Not only did Vince’s character channel the hatred of every worker out there who’s had to deal with an overbearing boss, but Vince’s willingness to embarrass himself and risk injury made him even better.

It would’ve been disappointing if Vince always kept control and always looked strong (hint to the Authority). Instead, Vince was on the receiving end of many a beating and Stone Cold Stunner, telling the story of the rivalry between evil boss and rebellious employee with masterful tact.

Without the Mr. McMahon character, there’s no way WWE would’ve been as successful as it was during the Attitude Era.
