Best Decision: Creating the Royal Rumble

Pat Patterson has been one of Vince McMahon’s most loyal employees for over four decades, first as a wrestler and later as a backstage hand. He has worked with Vince on many occasions, putting together wrestling characters, backstories and, Patterson's speciality, match finishes.

In fact, at one time, Vince and Pat would sit and book everything in WWE by themselves, sometimes going as far ahead as six months, by simply working together. Truly, they were both very gifted in their understanding of the wrestling business.

Pat’s biggest contribution to WWE was his creation of the Royal Rumble. It was Pat who came up with the concept and pushed it very hard so that Vince would get on board. Eventually, Vince caved in to Pat’s pressure and put together the first Royal Rumble match. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Royal Rumble has since become one of the most popular and highly-anticipated WWE shows of the year. Its randomness and unpredictability are its biggest draws, and the uniqueness of its eponymous match is (almost) always guaranteed to create lots of drama.

Fans everywhere owe a lot to Pat Patterson for creating this concept, and in turn creating some of the greatest moments in WWE history.
