10 Gimmicks WWE Should Steal From Television (And Who Could Use Them)

Sticking with Shearsmith and Pemberton (and Mark Gatiss, obviously), The League of Gentlemen is one of the great British comedy series. Arguably the most popular example of black humour in modern history, the show revolved around a collection of increasingly weird characters in a duller-than-dull town called Royston Vasey. There were Edward and Tubbs at the local shop for local people, the bizarre Dentons, Pauline the restart officer and plenty more.

In a world of sinister individuals, Hilary Briss stood out. The town’s resident butcher, Briss always gave off a sense that he knew more than the rest, that he was fully aware of the town’s hopelessness and drudgery. Briss preyed on the pathetic residents of Royston Vasey, getting them hooked on his ‘special stuff’. He is one of the town’s true villains.

Wrestling needs a great sinister butcher. Andy Williams (he of Every Time I Die fame) is one of the sport’s great stories, but it isn’t entirely clear where his moniker comes from. Ham up the butcher elements, big man! WWE should jump the gun and introduce its sinister butcher, portrayed by none other than Curtis Axel.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
