As far as entertainment companies go, few come close to WWE when it comes to flashing puppy dog eyes at the military. This is a company that holds frequent shows titled ‘Tribute to the Troops’, after all. There has been no shortage of military-friendly WWE performers, from Sgt. Slaughter to John Cena. All of them have been tough, all of them have been patriotic.

But serving your country is a test that can awaken some demons that won’t get back in the box. Owen Hunt is one of the staple characters of Grey’s Anatomy, everyone’s favourite surgery-based serial drama. Hunt is an army veteran with tours of Iraq under his belt, back to work in trauma surgery but all too aware of the fragility of life and death. His military training stands him in good stead in the chaotic world of surgery, but the psychological traumas experienced will never leave.

Fans should have zero faith that WWE could pull off the ‘strong but sensitive military veteran’ gimmick, but it would be a creative and interesting change of pace from ‘patriotic dude with muscles’. A degree of realness would be required for the gimmick, so why not make this the eventual direction for one of the Forgotten Sons?

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
