10 Great Chris Benoit Moments WWE Shouldn't Let You Forget
7. Chris Benoit Wins The WCW Title - Souled Out 2000
It was the title that had eluded him his entire career and the night he won it in 2000 should have been the greatest moment of his career, but winning the WCW title was bittersweet for Chris Benoit and actually was the last appearance Benoit ever made for Ted Turner's organization. In 2000, Benoit was unhappy with the state of WCW. He felt that him and his fellow midcarders were being held down by the old guard and, as long as they were in the promotion, Benoit would never get a shot at being a main event star. Kevin Sullivan had also recently been promoted to head writer of WCW. Benoit felt the history between the two men would ensure that Benoit would be buried and left for dead once Sullivan got his way. Benoit (rightfully so) felt that WCW was no longer the best place for him. In a last ditch effort to keep Benoit in the territory, they put the WCW title on Chris Benoit by having him defeat Sid for the vacant belt at Souled Out 2000. Benoit got the best possible match someone could get out of Sid Vicious (for a wrestler, he's one hell of a softball player) and actually attempted psychology in the match as well. After some back and forth and Sid hitting Benoit with a huge chokeslam, Benoit managed to hook the Crippler Crossface on Sid near the ropes. Special referee Arn Anderson failed to notice that Sid's foot was under the ropes but Sid submitted anyway, giving Chris Benoit his first world title. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHmz8Ifuz2Q it was a moment that Benoit should have been proud of but Chris knew that he was on his way out of the promotion. The next day, Benoit allegedly threw the world title in the trash can at the WCW offices and left for the WWF and greener pastures.
