10 Great Matches When Wrestlers Stopped Giving A Damn

8. Team DX Vs. Team RKO - Survivor Series 2006

One of the great guilty pleasures of 21st-century professional wrestling. Team DX vs. Team RKO ended up being one of the most lopsided matches in Survivor Series history, an elimination match that all but ended the WWE career of the somewhat underrated Mike Knox and was another example of Triple H doing what he wanted when he wanted. Did Hunter and co need to sweep the heels? Of course not, but it was all sorts of fun while it happened.

Knox lasted a matter of seconds, walking into a Sweet Chin Music from Michaels. HBK played that he had no idea who he’d kicked, no idea that he was in the match, no idea at all. It was a funny moment that fans remember to this very day, but it was about as disrespectful to Knox and the fledgeling ECW brand as it got. The babyface team (comprised of DX, the Hardy Boyz and CM Punk) defeated the heels (Orton, Edge, Gregory Helms, Johnny Nitro and Knox) without breaking a sweat.

Despite the irrelevance of it all, this was a fantastic example of how pro wrestling can be carried by charisma and star power alone. None of the competitors really gave a damn about the match, but it was a tremendous showcase for magnetic personalities and pure, unadulterated popularity. WWE is sorely lacking this sort of star power in the modern age.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
