10 Great Matches When Wrestlers Stopped Giving A Damn

6. Becky Lynch Vs. Lacey Evans - Stomping Grounds 2019

Professional wrestling, for better or for worse, is a dance. Now, don’t go telling ol’ Corny and the hounds that, but then only the simple-minded will see that initial claim as a pejorative. At its core, pro wrestling is two individuals putting on a captivating and entertaining show for an audience, through the medium of simulated violence.

That dance requires at least two people (unless you are at Kota Ibushi levels of ability), and you are only as good as the person across the ring as you. Sometimes this leads to frustration, as inexperience and poor timing lead to both competitors being embarrassed in front of a live audience. This was the reality faced by Becky Lynch as she embarked on a feud with Lacey Evans, a series of matches that WWE thought was the best way to follow up Lynch’s history-making victory in the main event of WrestleMania 35. Go figure, good luck.

Lynch and Lacey had a series of awkward matches, but the last televised singles match was arguably the best. Why? Well, Lacey’s inexperience essentially became too much for The Man, and Lynch decided to take matters into her own hands and drag a good match out of the newcomer, by any means necessary. There’s only so many stumbles one can take, after all.

Professional wrestling is difficult, at the best of times. Only a tiny minority of individuals ever get to a competent level inside the squared circle, so by no means should this be considered a slight against Lacey Evans. Better suited as a babyface, the Sassy Southern Belle has improved with every passing month, but this remains her best main roster singles match to date.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
