10 Great Matches When Wrestlers Stopped Giving A Damn

3. Neville Vs. Austin Aries - WWE Extreme Rules 2017

This feels like an absolute lifetime ago, doesn’t it? Neville’s WWE run came to a frustrating end (although the Bastard’s post-WWE run really has been one for the ages), but that is nothing compared to the tenure of the Greatest Man Who Ever Lived. Some three years on, fans can be forgiven for forgetting that Austin Aries was ever in WWE.

A man of Aries' talents deserved better, but such is life. Aries was one of those who suffered from moving from NXT to 205 Live, although he was positioned as a major performer on the cruiserweight brand. Aries and Neville feuded over the purple title during WrestleMania season, with Neville getting the better of Aries in every title match.

Extreme Rules 2017 was their last bout, and it was the last we saw of Aries in a WWE ring. He left WWE soon after, and that famous post-defeat smirk into the camera suggested he had long stopped caring about what happened to him in McMahon World. He may have stopped caring, but this final match was excellent, two top-tier professional wrestlers showing what they can do with the minimum of interest.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
