10 Great Wrestlers And Their Terrible Impersonators
5. Sting - nWo Sting
Most impersonations are short-lived affairs, designed with a single storyline in mind. Bizarrely, WCW's fake Sting lasted three years. In 1996, Jeff Farmer dressed as the Icon, Sting, to pull the wool over Lex Luger's eyes (not difficult - Luger is a dum dum), attacking him and making both him and the fans believe that Sting had allied with the new white-hot villains, the nWo. In the face of this appropriation of his likeness, the Stinger morphed into his most enduring incarnation, the Brandon Lee Crow-ripoff Sting with the white face paint. Of course, whenever Original Sting changed his appearance, Bogus Sting (aka nWo Sting) changed too, becoming a slightly shabbier version of the original. For the next few years, nWo Sting would just hang around, lose most of his matches, be forgotten about when real Sting was there, and generally be a bit rubbish. Bizarrely, nWo Sting did really well in NJPW. He started calling himself Extreme Sting, or EXterminator and his popularity actually eclipsed that of the actual Sting! It's a truly strange tale.
