When it comes to shock value, few moments in PG WWE were more jaw-dropping than Dean Ambrose's 2018 heel turn on Seth Rollins. Coming the same night as Roman Reigns' leukaemia announcement, emotional fans were horrified by the brutal sight of Ambrose DDTing the redeemed babyface Rollins on the concrete.

For years, both fans and Ambrose himself had longed for a heel turn to revitalise the character and restore him to something more serious. Instead, Ambrose became a germaphobe for reasons only Vince McMahon could likely explain. Cutting bizarre promos from the doctor's office, Ambrose even made heelish references to Reigns' cancer which, according to Mox on Talk is Jericho, were initially a hell of a lot worse on paper.

The whole thing was a catastrophe and solidified Ambrose's decision to leave the next year. While retirement rumours circulated, Ambrose was quickly replaced with Jon Moxley, 'The Lunatic Fringe's indie alter ego.

While Mox's bloodthirsty, gritty persona bears many similarities to his pre-WWE days, it's also a new phase in his career as a grizzled, babyface veteran. This change-up has allowed Moxley to become arguably the ace of AEW, an essential act at the top of the card and the only man to hold the AEW World Title three times. Between the claret-coated hardcore brawls and the edgy, threatening promos, Moxley's come a long way from the lovable goof he portrayed for much of his WWE run.
