Finishing with a fantastic example of the "wacky tag team partners" genre working to perfection, Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne were thrown together as a tag team prior to the 2020 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. In a formula also co-opted by dozens of movie and TV comedies, Riddle's carefree persona was met by Dunne's grumpy exterior. - and the NXT crowd loved it, especially given the established in-ring track records of both men.

According to Riddle, this was supposed to be a short-lived experiment. The team gelled so much, though, they won the tournament and, by extension, a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships.

That match came at NXT TakeOver: Portland, and included a buildup where Riddle and Dunne road-tripped to the venue. The vignettes were some of the funniest in NXT history, but, befitting the gimmick, the two were all-business once the bell rang. Once they got to the arena following their hijinks and shenanigans, Riddle and Dunne had a stellar match with Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly, where the challengers won the belts.

Unfortunately, outside events and hideous timing intervened. Just a few weeks after that event, the pandemic hit. Dunne could not travel to the U.S., Riddle and replacement Timothy Thatcher lost the belts to Imperium in fairly short order, and the story ended not with a bang, but a whimper. It's why we don't remember it as fondly as we should, and if you haven't seen this or want to relive it, seeking out the Portland show is time well spent.
