10 Great WWE United States Championship Matches You Completely Forgot About

6. John 'Bradshaw' Layfield Vs. William Regal - SmackDown, April 28 2006

Regal Finlay Great American Bash 2006

John 'Bradshaw' Layfield should only have ever been allowed to fight Europeans in brawling situations I think.

JBL had a sneakily fun WrestleMania XXIV brawl with Finlay, and this United States Championship match from an episode of SmackDown in London in 2006 fits the same bill. William Regal was the European on this occasion, and whilst no one believed the Englishman was winning the two still put on a show.

JBL gives the typical anti-UK promo to start, and is interrupted by Regal who gets his usual monster home soil pop. One fiery promo from Regal later and we have ourselves a title match, with Regal starting hot, to say the least. JBL turns the tide with a big boot, and Regal starts bleeding from the ear.

JBL was always at his best when the former APA-side shone through in matches, when he realised he was in a fight and had to go back to that bar-room style. It does the trick here, JBL defending his title after a Clothesline from Hell that seemingly connects with Regal's face.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
