Stemming from a friendly rivalry turned sour, the cage match between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio signalled the climax of a feud that began six months earlier at WrestleMania 21. In the meantime, the feud had become both heated and personal and it would all come to a head on the 9 September 2005 edition of SmackDown.

Unable to defeat Mysterio in the six times they had squared off in singles competition that year, anger and frustration had built up inside Guerrero and victory over his nemesis had become an all-consuming obsession for 'Latino Heat'. Having gambled everything in his pursuit of vengeance, Eddie had nothing left to lose when the door closed and the opening bell rang.

Taking place in the home of wrestling in the south - Atlanta, Georgia - the match had a pronounced "big fight" feel to it, yet it was incredibly not even the main event of the show. That honour went to JBL and Batista in a Bull Rope Match for the World Heavyweight Title. Nevertheless, the cage still stole the show.

Tragically, Eddie was found dead in a hotel room two months later, making this the final time he faced Mysterio in a televised singles bout, while it was also the very last cage match of his career.
