10 Greatest ECW Champions
5. Terry Funk
This man still wrestles occasionally. This man debuted in 1965. That is all.
One of the all time greats, the Funker rebooted himself as a hardcore icon thanks to his work in ECW. Similar to Chris Jericho nowadays, Funk had a knack for reinventing himself, allowing him to remain over and relevant as the years continued to roll by. Funk’s persona in ECW varied from bloodthirsty wild man to veteran babyface looking for another day in the sun. Consistently beloved by fans and peers alike, Funk was a favourite no matter what he was up to.
A two-time ECW champ, Funk’s star power and legendary status proved a great boon. Gone was the traditional Southern styled wrestler of old, now was the time for Funk the deathmatch king. With next to no cartilage in either knee, Funk headlined ECW’s first pay per view, Barely Legal '97, with two brutal matches. Ending the night on a high note as ECW champ, a bloody Funk had made good on his promise in '93 to elevate ECW. Heyman and the rest of the locker room presented Funk with a Lifetime ECW champion belt as a thank you for his brutal efforts.
