10 Greatest Masked Wrestlers Of All Time

5. The Destroyer

5327 As The Destroyer (occasionally billed as Dr. X), Dick Beyer is one of the most respected names in pro wrestling, as well as the guy that practically wrote the book on playing a masked character. Although The Destroyer gimmick was only designed to be temporary, it actually got over extremely well. Like all good masked wrestlers, Beyer would wear his mask everywhere he went (and continues to do so to this day). He played his character up to the hilt and fans around the world went crazy for it. Following high profile runs for the WWA (World Wrestling Associates) and the old NWA, Beyer went to work for Verne Gagne€™s AWA (American Wrestling Association) in Minneapolis. Here, he changed his name to Dr. X and continued to be a successful draw in the region, eventually unseating Gagne himself for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship. Finally, Beyer returned as The Destroyer for a series of incredibly successful tours across Japan and Canada. The Destroyer ended his glittering career as a 4-time World Champion, leaving behind an enduring legacy as one of the most memorable characters in the history of professional wrestling.

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
