10 Greatest Wrestling Documentaries
7. Forever Hardcore (2005)
Much like The Last of McGuinness, Forever Hardcore is not pretty to look at. It's actually a bit worse. Really, there's not much to look at in general (a simple lighting kit would have gone a long way). It's just one talking head after another for two hours mixed in with photos.
Since WWE had all the rights to ECW footage, this was going to be a big challenge no matter what. But luckily, those heads are filled with interesting insight and help fill in the details of the magic and madness of Paul Heyman's renegade promotion.
Director Jeremy Borash joined the mainstream of professional wrestling with WCW, but it was ECW that captured his imagination and rekindled his love of the business. The mark it left on him inspired him to release a tell-all documentary on the company and helped fill in some of the blanks which the WWE produced offering could not.
Sandman, Terry Funk, Joey Styles, Raven, Shane Douglas, and even people who never worked in the promotion like Vince Russo and Ed Ferrera give their take on ECW. All of the big moments are covered: Douglas throwing down the NWA Title, the crucifixion of Sandman, the renewed hope of joining TNN, bounced checks, and the sad end.
Not having Paul Heyman involved hurts the film (as does some painfully generic music) but the rest of the players help make up for his absence and produce a must-listen oral retelling of the much-loved promotion.
