5. Bob Backlund

When one thinks of Bob Backlund, he may not strike you as someone who succeeded at the highest level imaginable during his time in WWE. At his height as the heavyweight champion of the world, he was never particularly big, nor did he have a dynamic personality. What he did possess, though, was impeccable fitness and a technical skill set unrivaled by his contemporaries.

A skilled and celebrated amateur wrestler out of the University of Minnesota, Backlund excelled in an age of heavyweights and bodybuilders in New York because he was different. He was a legitimate athlete who lent credibility to the industry in which he starred.

When he emerged from a semi-retirement of sorts in 1993, Backlund again showed the wrestling world why he was among the business' greatest catch-as-catch-can wrestlers in the long and illustrious history of the WWE. Sprinkle in a psychotic persona to go along with his superb in-ring ability and you had a career renaissance that netted the future Hall of Famer another run with the WWE Championship and one last shot at glory.
