10 Greatest WWE WrestleMania Gimmick Matches
2. TLC 2 (WrestleMania X-Seven)
With the Attitude Era peaking and WCW talent moving in, 2001 saw a crowded field in WWE. To get noticed, you had to go the extra mile. This goes some way to explaining while these six young men would take such insane risks all in the name of entertainment.
WrestleMania 2000’s Triangle ladder match and SummerSlam’s inaugural Tables, Ladders, and Chairs sewed the seeds, but X-Seven’s TLC 2 was the main event. More than a spot-fest, featuring delightful irony - each team suffers the brunt of their own signature weapons - and the extended universe of the tag division, with the third member of the teams getting involved.
That’s not to say there aren’t some crazy spots, though, because there very much are. Matt and Bubba smashing through four stacked tables; Christian taking a ridiculous spill to the outside; and of course, Edge spearing Jeff in midair as he hangs from the belts.
It’s a match that the most cynical non-fan would enjoy, and a measuring stick for extreme crazy bouts ever since. It’s the kind of behaviour that takes years off careers - only, heartwarmingly, four out of the six guys are still in active competition today.
