Getting a celebrity pop out of a modern WWE crowd is difficult, nigh on impossible. Almost all of the ‘celebrities’ who make it to WWE TV are fully deserving of those inverted commas, people who are famous for being famous or have made a name out of doing as little as possible. The lower rungs of celebrity society, for want of a better phrase. Gone are the days of Muhammad Ali, Mr. T and Cyndi Lauper; we’re now in the world of Machine Gun Kelly, Flo Rida and the rest.

Jon Stewart is one of the few legitimately credible celebrities that have featured on WWE TV in recent years, getting involved in a mini-feud with Seth Rollins back in 2015. Stewart appeared on RAW in March of that year, interrupting Rollins' own version of ‘The Daily Show. Several wise cracks followed along with a number of serious comments, with Stewart keeping the crowd onside the whole time. Low-blowing Rollins certainly helped.

So what did WWE do with a celebrity who managed to get a positive reaction from a cynical crowd? They turned him heel, because of course they did. Never change WWE, never change.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
