10 Huge WWE Comebacks That Led To More Huge Comebacks
2. Roman Reigns, Then Paul Heyman (2020)
‘The Big Dog’ Roman Reigns was on a collision course with Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 36 but ultimately had to drop out when the pandemic hit, with him being immunocompromised from his battles with leukaemia. Thinking about himself and his family, he took a step back and time away from WWE.
Paul Heyman too took a leave of absence around this period, after his client Brock Lesnar stopped working for WWE following WrestleMania 36 when he dropped the WWE title to Drew McIntyre. It looked for the longest time WWE had no use for Heyman without Lesnar. But plans change, pal.
Roman made his long-awaited return at SummerSlam, beating down Braun Strowman and The Fiend, and showing a viscous side he hadn’t before. As revealed on the next few episodes of SmackDown, Roman was turning heel. Needing to cement his heel turn, WWE brought back Heyman to manage him. Heyman has said on their partnership: “We both wanted to see just how much we could transform this industry, set the trend, and blaze a path that no one had had the balls to blaze before.”
You can’t argue it hasn’t worked. With Heyman by his side, Roman’s delivering the best work of his career or of anyone on the roster.
