10 Hushed Scandals That Rocked Wrestling

10. Vince And Rita Chatterton

Rita Chatterton was the first woman referee the WWF ever hired, but she didn't last long in the job. There are two different stories as to why.

In 1986 she alleged that she asked Vince McMahon for more work, which she said resulted in him making sexual advances towards her, culminating in him forcing her to give him oral sex in a limousine. She was later fired, and revealed her story on Geraldo Rivera's syndicated TV show Now It Can Be Told .

Vince and Linda McMahon were furious about the allegations and later sued her, Geraldo and the media companies that aired the show for $1,000,000. Their reasoning for firing her in the brief was that ”Chatterton was dismissed from the WWF because she was not a competent ring referee and posed a danger to herself in the ring”. Chatterton stated otherwise.

David Schults was also named in the lawsuit, as the McMahon’s believed he conspired with Chatterton to extort money from the company. He had become infamous years earlier for slapping reporter John Stossel for questioning whether wrestling is real, which saw him fired from the WWF and blackballed from the business.

The McMahon’s eventually dropped the lawsuit, claiming they needed to focus on the steroid trial. In 2010, the website talkingpointsmemo attempted to reproduce the text of the suit on their website, until they were threatened with a lawsuit themselves.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
