10 Incredible Wrestling Title Wins (…That Led To RUBBISH Reigns)
2. Rey Mysterio: World Heavyweight Championship
Rey Mysterio is a career underdog. A better chaser than he is a champion, Rey's trio of World title victories in WWE were futile endeavours, none more so than his first.
Impulsively thrust into WWE's main event scene following the heartbreaking passing of Eddie Guerrero, WWE presented Rey Mysterio as if he was Eddie Guerrero, an opportunity for them to capitalise on, not memorialise, Eddie's passing. WWE themselves handicapped his first stint as World Heavyweight Champion as, in his title crusade heading into WrestleMania 22, Randy Orton - that year's Royal Rumble runner-up - was handed Mysterio's title shot instead, having pinned Rey at No Way Out. When Rey was blindly inserted back into the match, it was hardly a token of his babyface characteristics. He'd lost the opportunity and had done nothing to earn it back.
Mysterio lost frequently, succumbing to Mark Henry, Finlay, The Great Khali, and Rob Van Dam during his lamentable 112-day stint, gnawing all believability he'd built in the months preceding his big win, which itself was a pithy attempt at presenting Mysterio as a main event-level mogul.
WWE viewed him as no World Heavyweight Champion - he just happened to be the guy holding the belt.
