10 Incredibly Creative Ways WWE Stars Got Themselves Over
9. Nick Dinsmore Took On A New Persona
In OVW, Nick Dinsmore was being groomed as the next great babyface to land in WWE. Jim Cornette had him featured as one of his top stars, and kept trying to get him on the main roster where he could make the company some real money. They never bit. McMahon didn’t want another white meat babyface at the time.
So, Nick landed a meeting with the boss himself and pitched him an entirely new character: a childlike adult who was a lifelong wrestling fan. He wasn’t bright but he had a heart of gold and quickly picked up the business simply through watching it. He couldn’t drive a car but he could dish out a Stone Cold Stunner. It was a far cry from "Nick Dinsmore" the wrestler, and yet, Vince loved it.
In fact, McMahon was so enamoured with the concept that he quickly promoted Nick to the main roster. After all those years of waiting in the minor leagues and training others who went on to experience great success, Dinsmore was finally given his opportunity by becoming Eugene.
Amazingly, the gimmick caught on like crazy for a bit. Eugene was a featured performer on TV and eventually found himself in a major program with Triple H that culminated at SummerSlam 2004.
It's possible that Nick could have toiled longer in OVW and been given a shot eventually. Maybe long-term it would have worked out better for him. But that one massive gimmick overhaul that came from his brain quickly earned him a top role on Monday Night Raw.
