10 Irritating Wrestling Chants WWE Fans Really Need To Let Go

4. What?

Stone Cold Steve Austin will forever be remembered as one of the most popular and respected WWE Superstars of all time. He will also be remembered as the man who introduced one of the most infuriating catchphrases in wrestling history. Back in 2001 when Austin was trying to add a more comedic layer to his character he developed the "What?" catchphrase where he would annoy the heels by pretending to ignore them. Much like the Yes chants (which could make this list in another ten years) this simple phrase caught on with the fans and would become one of the most repeated words in wrestling history. Fans now had a weapon to throw at every heel (and eventually face) trying to cut a promo. Some heels like Kurt Angle and R-Truth have played on fans using the word "What?" to draw more heat, but most of the time the What chants are just plain distracting. Like the Boring chant, it signifies that fans aren't interested in a promo and have decided to entertain themselves. In recent years WWE fans have even started chanting during face babyface promos. They even chanted "What?" at the Undertaker. That is not okay! Steve Austin himself is the only wrestler who actively encourages the "What?" chants because when fans chant it at him, it's a compliment. For everyone else though, it needs to go. It should have disappeared eleven years ago when Austin retired!

As a wrestling fan I've flown across the Atlantic for the last five years specifically to attend WrestleMania (28 and 30) as well as TNA, ROH, Evolve, Chikara and most recently PWG. I may have a problem! But if you're reading my work then you probably love wrestling too, so lets focus on that!
