10 Jake 'The Snake' Roberts Promos You Must Watch

Watching Jake give a promo was akin to watching a master painter at work.

A member of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2015, Jake 'The Snake' Roberts was one of the most iconic professional wrestlers of the 1980s and 90s. Jake stood out like a sore thumb in a time of larger than life heroes and villains. At the time, promos were generally given in a one-dimensional world, threats and spittle shouted directly into a camera in the shape of cliches and tired phrasing. Jake was different. He perfected the sinister, the quiet, the dark. Watching Jake give a promo was akin to watching a master painter at work, as words and phrases were committed to tape with a quiet confidence. It was poetry, the likes of which hadn't been seen in professional wrestling before. Whether as a heel or a babyface (although you could argue there was little character difference between the two), Jake was a master storyteller, frequently managing to get over his opponent, himself, his snake Damien and his patented DDT, throwing in the odd biblical reference along the way. Jake's influence can be seen in many stars since, so heading back through the warehouse and picking out some of his finest microphone moments has been an absolute pleasure. Here are 10 Jake 'The Snake' Roberts promos you simply must see...

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
