Roman Reigns's trip down to the midcard was always meant to be a temporary thing. The idea was that taking some of the focus off of him would make fans hate him less, and eventually engender some good will toward him. That way, when he did go back to his position as the top babyface on Raw, the WWE Universe might actually accept him.

It hasn't worked, in no small part because Reigns is still one of the hardest-pushed stars on the show - he's just defending a different title. Whether he's being cheered or not, though, WWE's probably not going to change whatever plans they have to shoot him back up the card. As we've seen at the past couple of WrestleManias, they're pretty stubborn about Reigns.

So could Sunday be the day that his trip back to main title contention begins, starting with a United States Championship loss? It's a longshot. While Reigns will have to lose the belt eventually, he's only held it for a month, and Rusev won't be the man to unseat him. Expect Reigns to beat Rusev cleanly and reign as U.S. Champ for a while longer.
