10 Lessons WWE's Main Roster Is Slowly Learning From NXT's Success

10. The NXT Champion Doesn't Always Have An Immediate #1 Contender

Finn Balor's been the NXT Champion for three months. For one of those months, he was paired with Samoa Joe as the top-seeded team in the Dusty Rhodes Invitational Tag Team Tournament, while not actively defending his championship on television OR actively discussing his issues with a #1 Contender. In the same 90-day cycle, WWE Champion Seth Rollins has worried about John Cena, Sting, Kane, Sheamus and also holding the United States Championship. In NXT, Finn Balor is such a demonstrably great wrestler that he doesn't necessarily need to wrestle in singles matches or championship contests every week because his performances are treated as an attraction. In WWE, if Seth Rollins were similarly presented, it'd actually benefit the company greatly. Imagine if Sting had to work with Sheamus and John Cena was allowed to continue his run as US Champion unabated, Rollins eventually wrestling Sheamus or Sting (and to a lesser extent Cena) could be presented as much more of an attraction than "just another championship match."
