10 Major Stars Who Escaped WWE Creative Jail

9. Kane

Creative jail is an apt metaphor for the WWF of the pre-Attitude Era 1990s. One of its best creations was an actual convict character, and so what chance did the demented baseball players and gee-whizz race car drivers stand?

The wider, broad narrative isn't entirely accurate - the best of the in-ring stuff was phenomenal in both athletic achievement and storytelling heft, the 1-2-3 Kid was wrestling heart-in-mouth ultra-bangers most Mondays, and the long-term arcs of Bret Vs. Owen Hart et al. were powerful enough for us to mourn their like now, over 20 years later - but f*ck me was much of it embarrassing trash.

A trip to the dentist is terrifying, with its threats of searing, jolting agony and the self-loathing that comes with being told that you are worthless. You can't even clean your mouth properly? But it's so small. And so are you.

Isaac Yankem, DDS was not terrifying. Even his name was a joke, and a sh*tty one. Mercifully abandoned quite quickly, after another stint in jail - "We gotta new gimmick for ya, Glenn - and it's literally the worst of all time!" - Jacobs emerged as Kane, who lived up to the most iconic monuments of horror cinema: an eerie, head-tilting, destructive void of humanity, the original film was a masterpiece.

And the vast majority of the sequels were rubbish.
