10 Massively Dubious Wrestling Records
1. Dishonourable Mentions
WWE claims that the concept of wrestling on pay-per-view was its own invention. Not true; Jim Crockett Promotions got there first two years later...
The company also claims that it brought a hitherto unseen prestige and critical acclaim to women's wrestling following the introduction of NXT. Again, that is a falsehood. The Japanese joshi scene of the eighties was dripping in critical acclaim. One female wrestler - Manami Toyota - boasts more Wrestling Observer five star matches than WWE itself, her tally of seventeen positively trouncing WWE's nine...
Chris Jericho defeated The Rock and Steve Austin in the same night, and while strictly true, it remains a massively dubious wrestling record. The implication is that he is somehow twice the star, or twice the performer - but constantly calling attention to it just underlines the desperation behind the tactic.
Similarly, The Miz likes to assert that he headlined WrestleMania - but he was a supporting player at best, and his performance hardly generated award show buzz. Again, it's a dubious accomplishment made worse through constant reference.
