When Daniel Bryan stepped into the main event of WrestleMania XXX, we all knew what was going to happen. There were some nerves, but Bryan needed to win, and he did so. Now, imagine he hadn’t? Imagine he’d walked out there, been RKOd and that was it. It would have been shocking, but it wouldn’t have been good.

Of course, on this occasion that didn’t happen, but far too often things like that do. WWE ignores the obvious story to surprise. Zack Ryder wins the Intercontinental Title, Brodus Clay is a dinosaur and Rikishi ran over Stone Cold. All of which came as a shock but not necessarily a treat.

Because, here's a little secret for you: those stories don't work. Surprises can be fun, but in the long-term, they tend to lead you down a road you can’t escape from. There’s no retreating to the earlier option because that exit has disappeared into the rear-view mirror and you’re heading all the way to mediocrity.

There’s a reason that most films end with the good guys saving the day - it’s because the obvious answer is usually the right one.
