In the last year, heels like The Miz, Alexa Bliss, and The Usos began to find their feet in WWE. They were able to tap into their characters and cut promos that showed who they were and their motivations for what they did. So what did WWE do? They cancelled the program they did it on.
Talking Smack was unique in the current WWE landscape as it allowed talent to cut unscripted promos. It gave the wrestlers mentioned above, alongside the likes of Kevin Owens and even Daniel Bryan, the opportunity to shine and they grabbed it. They spoke from the heart and it made all the difference.
Not every wrestler can walk out with a live microphone and cut a promo. Some people went on Talking Smack and froze, if you sat through Charlotte’s awkward appearance you would know that. However, some people do the same thing when having to memorise a script. WWE has got too stringent in the way they construct promos, and a little bit of freedom could help a hundred more wrestlers find themselves.
