10 Modern Wrestling Tropes We're Totally Sick Of
2. "The Hardest Part Of The Ring!"
A simple one, this, but still worth mentioning: how many times do we need to be reminded that the apron is, indeed, "the hardest part of the ring?"
Commentators blurt this line out almost every single time somebody has their back cracked on the apron. It's as if they see the viewers as goldfish who couldn't possibly have picked up that this area is significantly stiffer than the rest of the squared circle, or perhaps they assume that everyone tuning in is watching wrestling for the first time. Regardless, it's a pain in the *ss.
The frequency with which such spots are executed is another problem, as a move loses impact when you see it several times within the same broadcast. Apron spots should be huge, crushing moments, and potential match-enders, and should be saved for rainy days. Instead, they're transitional. A Canadian Destroyer on the apron means about as much as a basic vertical suplex in 2020.
