10 Moments That Destroyed WWE's King Of The Ring

3. Removing The Coronation

In the middle (and more successful) years of the King Of The Ring event, WWE fully committed to the idea of a professional wrestling king. Although some superstars took the gimmick and made it their own, each superstar that won the PPV tournament received a coronation.

Whether they chose to go the campy route and read a royal proclamation or chose to use the time to deliver a memorable promo, the King Of The Ring had a chance to bask in the glory. Again, exactly how they celebrated depended on their character and what type of king they would choose to be, but it was truly their moment.

Until it was taken away in 1998.

Some of the biggest moments through King Of The Ring history came during the coronation. Who can forget Lawler attacking The Hitman out of no where in 1993 or The Rocket dropping that moniker for 'The King Of Harts'? What about Helmsley using the crown to further punish Mankind, or the birth of Austin 3:16?

Perhaps that camp was something WWE wanted to avoid during the early stages of the Attitude Era, and the coronation was no more come 1998.

It would make a weak comeback in various forms over the years, but it would never again have the impact it did before mysteriously vanishing in the late '90s.
