4. The Stone Pitbull - Tomohiro Ishii

The above photo shows Tomohiro Ishii thoroughly enjoying a rare moment of not having the life kicked out of him during a match.

OK, that's a bit harsh. Ishii is no jobber, but of all the wrestlers on this list he's the one you'd most expect to lose in the main event. Which is why "Stone Pitbull" is such an apt summation of the qualities that have endeared Tomohiro to wrestling fans across the globe.

Unlike the majority of wrestlers, who are portrayed either as Olympian superheroes or demonic villians, Ishii is wrestling's equivalent of Sisyphus. Every attempt he makes to ascend to the top inevitably fails - he's yet to hold a World Championship in any major organization - yet his unshakeable resolve has made him an icon in and out of his homeland.

Ishii's resilience is the stuff of legend. His incredible selling means few others can match his ability to convey the physical toll of a match, making the audience wince with him at every blow suffered.

Yet he just. Keeps. Going.

Whether he's getting beaten pillar to post in the ring, or suffering the aftermath of yet another agonizing defeat, Ishii has spent the past two decades brushing himself off, lifting himself up and going one more round.

Dogged determination and unbending will? Just what you'd expect from a man called "The Stone Pitbull".
