10 Most Alarming Ways WWE Rewrites History

4. The AWA Barely Existed

The war between WCW and the WWF was well documented. The company will also bring up NWA names on occasion, but in WWE lore, it seems that the AWA was just a small indy promotion from Minnesota, when in reality, it was just as powerful as the WWWF and NWA for years.

It's an absolutely bizarre omission, as without the AWA, the WWF would have had their best promotion to steal talent from!

Vince took anyone and everyone he could from Verne Gagne's company. He basically grabbed everyone except for Verne and Greg themselves. Among his plunder was Jesse Ventura, Dino Bravo, Adrian Adonis, Lord Alfred Hayes, Gene Okerlund, Ken Patera, Wendi Richter and so many more.

There was also a lot of great work from WWE legends in the AWA that is never highlighted. They treat Bobby Heenan as a beloved figure, but all they ever show of him is his goofball antics in the early '90s or The Heenan Family or his pairing with Gorilla Monsoon. All good stuff to be sure, but it was nothing compared to his work with Nick Bockwinkle...who in turn did great work with Hulk Hogan, who was Vince's greatest treasure that he took.

It's a hypocritical, and bad revisionist history to grab so many ready made stars and present them as if they were all WWF creations. It's not hard to think that perhaps not too long in the future he'll do the same with A.J. Styles, Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
