10 Most Awkward WWE Moments Of 2020 (So Far)
2. Jeff Hardy Getting Arrested
There is such a thing as hitting too close to home. And WWE absolutely love it. Vince McMahon has rarely passed up the opportunity to take real life tragedies and somehow work them into storylines. However, as much as wrestling is meant to be a form of entertainment and a scripted sport, there is a line setting how much people are willing to ignore before things get a little hard to bear. Case and point: the recent Jeff Hardy-Sheamus storyline.
At first, this seemed fine. Sheamus was upset Jeff Hardy’s return was getting more hype than his own, and he wanted to make the Charismatic Enigma pay; good, logical storytelling. However, when these two did finally butt heads, the Celtic Warrior wasted no time in bringing up Jeff’s past struggles. This of course included referencing all the times Jeff ended up on the wrong side of the law.
Now this was wince inducing as it were, but then WWE decided to turn it up even more. Because on an episode of SmackDown, we began with the surreal sight of Elias having been run over by a car and the police finding a drunk Jeff Hardy lying nearby, with incriminating evidence to boot. They actually had Jeff Hardy, the overcome-all-his-past-struggles Jeff Hardy, get arrested on TV. Uncomfortable, unnecessary, and awkward as hell.
