Many factors - a book's worth - converged to kill off WCW. This intoxicating melee was a premature wake.

The three-man Radicalz group teamed with DX in a match so balls-to-the-wall thrilling that an on-the-wane X-Pac served as an acceptable substitute for the injured Eddie Guerrero. The crowd was molten. They could not believe their luck. Neither could Grandmaster Sexy; he hung himself in the ropes not as an Andrade Cien Almas-esque taunt but an involuntary toddler-like cheap thrill. The Rock immediately dropped Triple H with a suplex on the ramp. It initially felt like a terrible foley error - before the realisation hit that some poor b*stard had just taken a chair shot, out of sight and in vain.

The opening sequence wasn’t one of the most berserk matches ever, but multiple berserk matches taking place simultaneously. It barely settled down; The Rock in an amazing sequence despatched everybody in sight like he was in a side scrolling beat-em-up stuck on fast forward - before Triple H broke up the pin in just one of several heart-stopping near-falls.

For once, even Stephanie’s constant screeching added to, rather than detracted from, the presentation: like the fans, she was in a state of ceaseless agitation.
