10 Most Cringeworthy Political Angles In WWE History

7. DX's State Of The Union Address

D-Generation X were a huge part of the Attitude Era’s success. Lewd, crude, and out of control, they embodied the edgier programming that helped steer WWE through the Monday Night Wars, and ultimately guide them back towards success. They’re rightly remembered as one of the most successful stables in wrestling history, but as with many of Attitude’s relics, DX have aged horrendously.

December 1997 saw Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Chyna deliver a presidential-style State of the Union address on Raw. Spitting out more four-letter words than should be humanly possible in such a short segment, DX’s tongue-in-cheek address saw them reference the “Oral Office” and Bill Clinton’s Monica Lewinski affair, as well as make an insincere promise to tone their antics down.

It’s one of those things that was funny at the time, but comes off as cringe-inducing nonsense in 2016. Given wrestling’s ongoing sanitisation throughout the PG Era, it’s almost shocking to hear such content from two of WWE’s biggest stars. Imagine flicking over to SmackDown next Tuesday night and hearing Dean Ambrose and James Ellsworth doing the same thing…

For the most part, DX are a product of their era, and best left in the past. Fewer things exemplify this better than their State of the Union.
