10 Most Desperate Ways AEW Got You To Watch

9. The Secret Mystery Signing

On the Revolution 2021 go-home show, Tony Schiavone interviewed new AEW signing Paul Wight.

Incidentally: remember Paul Wight? His signing was met with major fanfare and incited so much discourse, and then...very little. He's a serviceable commentator on a free YouTube C-show. It was almost like wasting a day on Twitter talking about Todd Grisham. Actually he was too bland to be serviceable.

Anyway, on the Crossroads Dynamite special, Wight promised that as a broadcast professional, he had a scoop. In fact, it was "the biggest news ever". He also said "It's not who you think", which was code for "It's not CM Punk, but that's where your minds definitely went".

So the second biggest news ever, then.

The second biggest news ever was the signing of Christian Cage, the mystery surrounding whom was built as a key reason to purchase the show. The sheer reverence with which this name was treated led many to speculate wildly on Punk nonetheless.

With hindsight, Tony Khan was right to be excited - Cage has been incredible at crafting slow-burn TV matches and being a completely sly c*nt - but the hype did him and AEW's credibility in for quite a while.
