10 Most Disgusting Promotional Tactics For WWE In Saudi Arabia
5. Old Men Stumbling
Undertaker’s unannounced return to “action” in Saudi Arabia at Super ShowDown 2020 was in part a makeup for another poor performance at the previous year’s version of the show, which was one of the worst WWE PLE matches ever.
Of course, we’re talking about Taker versus Goldberg, a main event that was 15 years past its prime, and even two years past what might have been a passable match. Both men were cooked as wrestlers heading into the fateful match, and the excessive Saudi heat didn’t help matters. Goldberg matches since returning in 2016 have survived on smoke and mirrors, while Undertaker had been steadily declining heading into this match.
All of this provided a perfect recipe for a disaster. The situation worsened when Goldberg charged Taker and legit hit the ringpost, concussing himself. They stumbled about a bit longer, with Goldberg going for a Jackhammer, only to very nearly drop Undertaker right on his head/neck. Goldberg botched an attempted Tombstone himself before Taker ended the match with one of the saddest chokeslams ever seen.
One might be tempted to sympathize with two men who were north of 50 at the time battling in oppressive heat and then dealing with Goldberg’s mid-match concussion, but then you remember the cash grab that these shows and the wrestlers’ appearances were, and that sympathy quickly leaves your body. This was just an awful, legacy-crippling match that very nearly ended both men’s careers out of embarrassment.
