The moment that Shawn Michaels retired at WrestleMania 26, fans began fantasy booking his return to the ring. After all, retirements in professional wrestling are rarely (if ever) final and permanent.

But to his credit, HBK resisted the temptation to go back on his word, even when a storyline with former student Daniel Bryan perfectly provided the opportunity for a one-off match that would have been tremendous, and fans would have likely forgiven Michaels for going back on his retirement.

Instead, Shawn waited several more years to come back at Crown Jewely 2018 as part of a geriatric tag team match pitting the Brothers of Destruction against D-Generation X (average age: 51-1/2 years) in a dull, plodding, almost embarrassing, near-universally panned match that scanned more as a cash grab than a dream match.

The match accomplished nothing. It “settled a feud” that was set up just a few weeks earlier and wasn’t really ever spoken about again. HBK went back on his retirement, spoiling a perfect final match at WrestleMania 26, for a payday in a nothing match that no one speaks fondly about (and is often ridiculed). Rather than being an Attitude Era clash fans never got, the tag match became emblematic of WWE’s naked greed with these Saudi shows.
